The 55-year-old showed off her incredibly ripped body on Instagram recently with the caption, “Woman King here I come!”

The Help actress has been working out for the past two years with her trainer, Gabriela McLain, to get in fighting shape for her role in the upcoming Netflix movie The Woman King.

She plays a general of an all-female military unit who joins forces with her daughter to fight the French and neighbouring tribes as they try to enslave her people.

Gabriela shared the same photos on her Instagram page and heaped praise on Viola, writing, “Results don’t come for free,” she said. “There is no magic pill you can swallow. If you want to be badass you must work for it. But what it does require is dedication, consistency and lots of sweat.”

Viola, she said, is a “perfect example of how hard work pays off”. But it hasn’t all been plain sailing. In 2018 the actress was diagnosed as pre-diabetic and was shocked because, as she told Everyday Health, “I always find myself exercising and eating right.

"I’m going to manage it like a warrior! I’m trying to. It’s harder as you get older.”

Along with thrice weekly workouts, she follows the paleo or “caveman diet” which typically includes lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Meanwhile Viola, who’s an active human rights and social justice activist, has been showing her support for the Democrats’ vice-presidential candidate, Kamala Harris.

“Behold the power, the unyielding power, compassion, empathy, vision and ownership of that who is woman and who is black,” she captioned a recent Instagram post.

She also advocates for justice in the death of Breonna Taylor, who was shot and killed by the Louisville metro police department while asleep in her apartment in March this year.
