‘They did admit that it was loosely inspired by Zephany Nurse’ – Miché Solomon on Netflix series Blood & Water

A new South African Netflix series, Blood & Water – about a high-school teen in search of her long-lost sister – seems to have led many to draw similarities between it and the modern-day story of Zephany Nurse.

In 1997 Miché Solomon, who’s also known as Zephany Nurse, was stolen from her biological mother, Celeste Nurse, by Levona Solomon at the Groote Schuur hospital when she was just three days old.

In 2015 Miché was reunited with her family after meeting her biological sister, Cassidy Nurse. They were attending the same high school – and everyone noticed their striking resemblance.

Levona was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Speaking to YOU, 23-year-old Miché gets candid about her thoughts on the new series and the speculation about its similarities to her life story.

“The only thing I can comment is that Blood & Water is a beautiful series. Good job,” she says.

While Miché acknowledges the series doesn’t exactly portray her life, she says there were a few similarities.

“There are some similarities to how my biological sister found me. There are a few personal similarities as well, which I will not be discussing,” she adds.

She’s decided to speak publicly about the series because of the questions she’s received from many concerned people who followed her story, she says.

“Therefore me and my family had to set the record straight by also answering those who are genuinely following this incredible journey of our true life experiences.

“Somehow [our story] which is about our lives that we’re still living and facing on a daily basis might have inspired Blood & Water here and there.”

But she insists Blood & Water isn’t her story nor that of her family.

“We didn’t want anyone to draw a conclusion [about] our real-life story based on the series, Blood & Water, therefore we had to set the record straight regarding the suspicion.”

After the Solomon family was made aware of the series by family and friends, who saw the ad prior to the release date, they reached out to the Netflix team regarding some of the similarities.

“They did admit that it was loosely inspired by the Zephany Nurse story but that it’s fictional and it wouldn’t cause any conflicts with my life rights agreements,” Miché says.

“The main thing is that we had to set it straight to people that it was not our true story and that it’s still on the way.”

When asked for comment, the Netflix team for the series responded by stating, “Blood & Water is a fictional young adult series about a 16-year-old girl who engineers her transfer to a new and prestigious high school in Cape Town when she learns of a 17-year-old girl whom she suspects might be her sister who was kidnapped at birth.

“The concept was born from the show creators' desire to paint a different and exciting picture of Cape Town, which hasn't been seen before in most films and television.”
