Cape Town - Thomas Markle has responded to the news that Meghan and Harry have welcomed their first child – a son, in the early hours of Monday morning (6 May).
"I’m delighted to hear that mother and child are doing well," he said in a statement to The Sun.
"I’m proud that my new grandson is born into the British royal family and I’m sure he'll grow up to serve the crown and the people of Britain with grace, dignity, and honour.
"God bless the child and I wish him health and happiness, and my congratulations to my lovely daughter Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry, and God save the Queen."
The Duchess of Sussex hasn’t spoken publicly about her relationship with her father since becoming part of the royal family.
Thomas, on the other hand, has never shied away from discussing his strained relationship with his daughter. He previously stated that he hadn’t spoken to Meghan since she married Harry on 19 May last year, People reports.
Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, has also reacted to the happy news.
According to E! Online, Buckingham Palace announced that Doria is "overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild" and is with the couple at Frogmore Cottage.
According to reports, Meghan and Harry haven’t hired a royal nanny yet but Doria will be staying with the couple to help with the baby. She even has her own private room in the newly renovated cottage, Cosmopolitan reports.
