The instant Emma Maxwell’s radio alarm clock woke her, the morning DJ reminded everyone of the date: it was Friday the thirteenth. Emma smiled. She didn’t believe in bad luck. Even if she had, as she was due to meet her boyfriend, Mark Thompson, that night, she was certain nothing could ruin her day.

A little while later, as she sat daydreaming on the bus on her way to work, Emma wondered why so many people fretted over Friday the thirteenth. After all, it was just another day. As far as Emma could remember nothing particularly unlucky had ever happened to her on any previous Friday the thirteenth.

Moments later the bus got caught in a traffic jam, barely a quarter of a mile from the office where Emma worked. Glancing at her watch, Emma calculated that she still had a little time to spare. She was sure that the traffic would clear imminently. Positive thinking, that was the key.
