When Brazilian model Cris Galêra married herself last year in an unusual solo wedding ceremony, she said she'd at last found someone she could depend on – herself – but three months down the line, the beauty is having second thoughts.
The 33-year-old, who made world headlines with her nuptials, has revealed that she's decided to divorce herself because she's met someone new.
“I started to believe in love the moment I met someone else special,” she says.
After a series of heartbreaks Cris decided she was tired of waiting for Mr Right and announced last year that she was marrying herself.
At the time of her wedding, the São Paulo-based model said, “I reached a point where I matured, I realised that I am a strong and determined woman. I was always afraid of being alone, but I realised that I needed to learn to feel good about myself. When that happened, I decided to celebrate it.”
Not even the offer of a R7 million dowry from an Arab sheik, who was enamored with her stunning looks, deterred her from her plan. She publicly snubbed his proposal, saying she's committed to herself and was not for sale.
But when she recently met her special someone, who she hasn't identified yet, she had a change of heart.
Reflecting on her short-lived marriage, Cris says she was happy while it lasted.
American Meg Taylor Morrison will be hoping her own solo marriage will last a bit longer. She was left left devastated after her relationship ended shortly before she and her partner were due to tie the knot in a spooky ceremony on Halloween – her favourite day of the year.
In a bid to heal her heartache, she decided to go through the nuptials alone, which she described as "an act of self-love".
“Part of marrying myself was about going beyond people-pleasing or trying to look a certain way. It was about saying yes to my own desires,” says Meg, who's a life coach.
She hopes her story will encourage more people to pursue self-marriage and insists there’s nothing wrong with being in a solo relationship.
“I wear my ring every day and it reminds me to listen to my intuition and make decisions that align with my values," she says.
“It also acts as a reminder that loving myself first is the basis for healthy relationships with others, whether it’s my next romantic partner or my relationships with my family members.”
