The outrage was swift, intense – and with a level of hysteria not often seen directed at tech companies before.

WhatsApp is invading our privacy by spying on us and reading our messages! Facebook wants to use us to sell ads and share our contacts’ details! Mark Zuckerberg is stealing our data so he can just get richer and richer!

The reaction to WhatsApp’s new policy changes was so fierce that the company decided to delay its rollout, moving the enforced changes from 8 February to mid-May, to deal with the fallout.
