There's only one living author who has enough books in circulation to create such a structure. It's not James Patterson, JK Rowling, Dan Brown, Stephen King and Jeffrey Archer – it's Danielle Steel who has sold more books than all these other writers combined.

But when she hits the billion mark in terms of sales, which her publisher predicts she will do this year, it’s unlikely the American writer will be popping open the champagne to celebrate. Danielle never drinks alcohol and doesn’t believe in taking time off.
