Learners are heading back to school in America and for Nadya Suleman it means getting up before the crack of dawn to make sure her brood gets to class on time.

The 47-year-old found fame after she gave birth to the word's first surviving octuplets in 2009.

Now her youngest children – Noah, Maliyah, Isaiah, Nariyah, Jonah, Makai, Josiah and Jeremiah – have started their last year of middle school (Grade 6-8), an intermediate phase in the US between elementary and high school.

The proud mom took to social media to share their milestone. “First day of school," she captioned a picture of her eight youngest kids.

“Be proud of yourselves, kids, for being kind, respectful and helpful to all your fellow peers, teachers and staff. You're exceptional role models to the 6th and 7th graders. I love you," she added.

The 13-year-olds looked all grown up as they stood in a line in front of the garage door with their backpacks on.

It seems like yesterday that Nadya shared her massive baby bump with the world. The single mom made headlines around the world when she gave birth to eight babies on 27 January 2009 in Bellflower, California.

Nadya was already a mom to Elijah (21), Ameerah (20), Joshua (19), Aidan (16) and twins Calyssa and Caleb (15) by the time she gave birth to the octuplets.

Over the years, she's given people a glimpse into their lives as a big family.

When the octuplets started Grade 5, she shared a picture of them on social media.

"I love you, each and every one of you, unconditionally. You're all becoming some of the most kind, selfless, caring human beings I've ever known,” she said at the time.

All 14 of her children were conceived through IVF procedures performed by Beverly Hills reproductive specialist Dr Michael Kamrava.

His licence was revoked by the California Medical Board after it came to light that he'd implanted 12 embryos into Nadya. Of the 12, eight survived.

Most specialists recommend implanting only two embryos at once. Kamrava said at the time he was trying to appease a demanding patient.

Although Nadya has been criticised over the years for having so many kids, she doesn't pay any mind to the comments.

“I've never seen children who love and want to serve others, particularly those less fortunate, so boldly and confidently like each and every one of you do,” the proud mom says.

“I don't know what I could possibly have done to deserve being blessed so bountifully."
