A cup of coffee, a slice of cake and a chat with your best friend at your favourite café – that’s basically all you need for a relaxing afternoon.

But at this café, there’s an extra ingredient to enhance the feel-good factor: a furry feline is likely to join you at the table while you sip your latte. And just like that your afternoon will go from pretty good to absolutely purrfect.

The Gato Café in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, belongs to Giovanna Molinaro, who was inspired by cat cafés after seeing them on a 2018 visit to Japan, where the phenomenon is big.
