Your spouse cheats while you are fighting for your life in hospital – then after being discharged, you discover the woman he’s been sharing a bed with is none other than your mother.

It sounds like a scene from a telenova but this is the situation Kamylla de Melo found herself in. The Brazilian woman says she’ll never forgive her mother and her husband – the two people she trusted most – for the betrayal.

Kamylla, from the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, spent 78 days in a serious condition in ICU. Upon her discharge, her father broke the news to her that her mom had run off with her husband.

“I called my mother. I said I had left the hospital, that I was alive and asked if it was true that they were together. The answer? Yes, they were together and very happy,” she says.

“I couldn't believe what I heard.”

For as long as she can remember Kamylla says her mother has always competed with her. “She was only 20 years older than me, and said my clothes were better suited to her, that her food was better. Nothing I did was good enough.”

At 25 she met her husband, who was 10 years older than her. The couple wed and had a son together. Because of complications during the pregnancy, Kamylla had to undergo bariatric surgery. “The idea was not to lose weight but to take care of my hormonal rates,” she says.

But after the surgery, she suffered a stroke and needed to be hospitalised again. “During this period, my mother – I swear I can't call her a mother anymore – went to my house to help my husband take care of my son who at the time, was four years old. My father had stayed in the interior of Pernambuco with my younger brother,” she recalls.

She later learnt her husband had visited her twice and her mother came by once during the weeks she had spent in hospital.

Kamylla has since divorced her husband, who went on to marry her mother. “I recently learned my mother is keen to celebrate their anniversary, without even disguising she started going out with my then-husband while I was in the hospital,” she says.

It’s been two years since the biggest betrayal of her life. Kamylla has moved past the pain and has found love in the arms of a new man.

She still has contact with her ex and his new wife – but it’s not by choice. “My son stays with his father two or three times a week, by court order,” she says. “It’s not easy, but I am obliged to allow my little one to live with this toxic and harmful relationship.”
