Five cents doesn’t mean all that much anymore. Back when the old 5c coin was still in circulation, many of us would tell the cashier to keep it if we were given it in change or drop it in a charity box on the counter.

But as accountant Karmen Swanepoel will tell you, every cent counts. And, for her, that discontinued 5c piece is pure gold. She spent nine months collecting 50 000 of the coins to use as floor tiles in her braai room – and it wasn’t easy.
