To him, it felt like a ­real-life fairytale. They’d met on social media, chatted via Facebook, had lots of long phone and video calls – and now here she was, getting a bus from Cape Town to come to meet him in person at his home in Springs, Gauteng.

She was a doctor, she told him, a neurologist at Tygerberg Hospital, but she was prepared to put her life on hold to be with him.

For William Fourie* (37), it seemed almost too good to be true. Lockdown had just begun and he’d lost his job as a chef shortly before. Things were bleak – but now the woman who could well be “the one” was making her way to him.
