Just call him the freezer guy. It may not be the most auspicious title you can think of but in this day and age it’s about as complimentary as you can get.

Dr Dave Berchowitz is at the forefront of technology that is playing a vital role in the rollout of vaccines against the Covid-19 pandemic. And he’s South African to boot.

His company has designed and built a tiny freezer in which vaccines can be stored at temperatures as low as -80°C – perfect for the Pfizer vaccine, which needs to be stored at temperature of between -70°C and -80°C.
