She meets us at the gates of her new house outside Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, along with her five excited dogs. The beautiful double-storey home with a vine trellis, swimming pool and gorgeous views of the Boland landscape has been Zola Budd’s sanctuary since May and she’s loving being back in the land of her birth.

Now 55, Zola travelled the world as a young athlete and 12 years ago settled in South Carolina in the US but she’s home for good now.

“It was a tough decision,” she says. “We lived there when the kids were young, but they’ve left home now and we didn’t want to grow old there.” Zola and her husband, Mike Pieterse (59), have three children: Lisa (25) and twins Michael and Azelle (23).
