A pregnant nurse in the United Kingdom has died from coronavirus and is survived by her baby who was delivered by emergency C-section.
Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong was a nurse at University Hospital in England, just north of London, PEOPLE reports.
She tested positive for the virus earlier this month. Initially, Mary showed signs of improvement, but her condition deteriorated suddenly.
It’s unclear whether Mary had tested positive for Covid-19 while still at work in March, according to The Guardian.
Her deteriorating condition prompted doctors to perform an emergency C-section to save her baby daughter.
It’s not clear if the newborn also tested positive for Covid-19, the NY Post reports.
David Carter, chief executive of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, which manages the hospital where Mary worked, said in a statement the survival of the baby is a “beacon of light”.
“Mary worked here for five years and was a highly valued and loved member of our team, a fantastic nurse and a great example of what we stand for in this Trust,” David continued in the statement.
Her colleagues at the hospital described her as a “fabulous nurse”.
