A 20-year-old woman was arrested in North Carolina, America, on Wednesday after a video of her baby seemingly smoking dagga was circulated on social media.

In the 10-second a video an adult is seen placing a cigarette into the mouth of a baby, The Washington Post reports. The child shrieks, takes a puff and then blows out smoke.

Scores of angry Facebook users alerted police about the video on Wednesday morning and also asked that the mother be brought to book.

The origins of the video is still unclear, as is who first shared it on social media.

Brianna Ashanti Lofton was arrested on Wednesday and the baby placed in protective care.

The woman was charged with two counts of felony child abuse and marijuana possession – although it’s not clear if this is what the infant had been smoking.

The Raleigh police office in North Carolina thanked members of the public on their Facebook page yesterday.

“We appreciate the public’s help in this matter. Thanks to your willingness to get involved, the child is now safe, and the mother is in police custody,” it said.
