There’s something magnificent about a queen in all her royal finery and Denmark’s Queen Margrethe was that and more when she posed for a new portrait to mark her milestone 80th birthday, which was 16 April.

The stunning portrait taken at Fredensborg Palace by Per Morten Abrahamsen

shows the Danish head of state resplendent in a teal gown and royal jewels, including a tiara and a perlepoire set consisting of a diadem, necklace, earrings and brooch with precious stones.

Fans loved the image, which was shared by the palace on social media.

“We have a very beautiful queen. She seems eternally young, happy and healthy in her appearance. And how beautiful she is in that colour too,” one commentator remarked.

Another said, “We have a beautiful queen, a great personality, and who has such fine dignity in every situation.”

Along with her beauty she’s known for her outspoken character. Two of her more famous quotes are, “I smoke wherever there’s an ashtray” and “I will remain on the throne until I fall off”.

The Danish monarchy is one of the oldest in the world and Queen Margrethe’s heritage can be traced back more than 1 000 years to a king believed to be born around the year 900.

Margrethe has been on the throne since 1972 and her son, Crown Prince Frederik (52), is in line to succeed her.

Unlike other monarchies, the Danish royal family is not big on pomp and ceremony.

The children of the royal family attend ordinary public schools and the adults can often be seen shopping, eating out or riding around on bicycles just like any other Dane.
